North American CSP-based Videoconferencing Services Markets

Videoconferencing equipment vendors such as Cisco/Tandberg and Polycom have produced many ROI calculators and TCO tools to quantify the various CAPEX (capital expenditures) and OPEX (operational expenditures) savings that enterprises and SMBs would incur by adopting the technology. For instance, a Polycom study revealed that enterprises, on average, by adopting videoconferencing, can:

  • Save xx percent on travel costs
  • Lower time-to-market by xx percent
  • Reduce training costs by xx percent
  • Trim recruitment times by xx percent
  • Shrink sales-related costs by xx percent

Similarly, by embracing collaboration via videoconferencing and telepresence, Cisco was able to achieve T&E (Travel and Expenses) savings of the order of xx to xx percent for its European Services unit. Besides the travel cost savings, there are also other "soft dollar" benefits associated with videoconferencing services, including fewer transportation delays, less administrative time spent planning trips, and a reduction in lost productivity during travel.

Improving Employee Productivity and Work-Life Balance
There has been an increased necessity for conferencing and collaboration tools that can enable productivity enhancements, cost cutting, and communication with geographically dispersed workers. Concomitantly, there has also been a movement towards "flexible working" (i.e., working from home, work-life balance, etc.), which is becoming an important requirement for the videoconferencing services market. As a result, corporate users want, for instance, to extend the desktop- and room-based videoconferencing experience to their mobile devices, so they can communicate and collaborate effectively wherever they happen to be (at home, away on a business trip, etc.).
Last but not least, travel usually entails other expenses that are more difficult to quantify than direct costs, but just as real. The stress and fatigue suffered by frequent business travel can negatively impact an employee’s work-life balance, thereby increasing employee attrition rate, lowering staff morale, and reducing overall productivity. We expect the need for increased employee productivity, coupled with a growing focus on work-life balance, to make up an important driver over the forecast period.
