Synthetic rubber is a type of artificial elastomer which serves as a substitute for natural rubber in many cases especially, when improved material properties are required. It can be made from the polymerization of a large number of monomers including isoprene, butadiene, chloroprene and isobutylene along with a small percentage of isoprene for cross-linking. Synthetic rubber plants were built after 1945 and since then synthetic has maintained the lead. Butadiene is the major feedstock in synthetic rubber.

 

The global synthetic rubber production and consumption has been increasing significantly over the last few years. However, there was a dip in the production as well as consumption in 2009 due to financial crisis. Of the global butadiene demand, Butadiene Rubber (BR) accounts for major share by usage. China is the largest producer as well as consumer of synthetic rubber. China also produces significant quantity of Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR) which is the most important type of synthetic rubber. Japan also undertakes significant production of SBR. In Japan, the major producer of synthetic rubber is JSR.
